Although salmon fishing provided the main food source of the Stó:lō people, hunting has also played an important part in their diets. Some of the animals used by the Stó:lō for meat and furs were deer, elk, black bear and mountain goat. Ducks and geese were also a part of the Stó:lō diet.
Animals were traditionally butchered and then wind-dried, smoked, or salt-cured for storage. Pelts were made into clothing or used for blankets or wall insulation. Fattier animals, like the back bear (and also the sockeye salmon) had their fat boiled out to use for cooking, medicines, protection of cedar, and for hair products.
