The blackberry is found growing low to the ground and primarily in open woods and clearings (but can also be found in well-lit forests). The wild trailing blackberry can be identified by its vine-like crawling, prickly stems, and its bluish-grey colour. It is smaller than the Himalayan blackberry (contemporarily found in many regions throughout the Fraser valley). When the berries are ripe, usually in mid-August, they are bright red and quite sweet. These berries traditionally have been made into berry cakes, but can now be found in pies and in freezers.
