t'qwem (Thimbleberry)
The thimbleberry is a sweet, juicy berry that is traditionally made into berry cakes. These berries mirror the distribution of salmonberries, near the edges of forests and near river banks. Traditionally, Fraser Canyon Stó:lō would use the thimbleberry leaves to clean fish after butchering. Also, these leaves would be spread on the ground so the fish could be butchered on a clean surface. Similarly to those of the salmonberry, young thimbleberry sprouts are traditionally consumed as a fresh vegetable.
