A Journey to a New Land

Richardson Island

Richardson Island is located in southeastern Haida Gwaii, off the west coast of British Columbia. The earliest occupation of the site occurred about 9300 years ago, when it was located close to the sea shore. Since then, sea levels have risen and the site is located today about 100 meters inland in a densely forested area.

Artifacts found at the earliest level consist of simple flake tools and biface tools. The artifacts from a later occupation, beginning about 9000 years ago include microblades, which were not found at the earlier occupation. This indicates that new tool making methods were developed or introduced sometime between about 9300 and 9000 years ago.

The only animal remains that have survived at the site are a few fragments of burnt bone from fish, birds and possibly caribou.
