Several types of now-extinct cats thrived in North America during the last Ice Age, including the scimitar cat (Homotherium serum), the saber-toothed cat (Smilodon fatalis) and the American lion (Panthera leo atrox). Their speed and agility, powerful jaws, and razor sharp teeth enabled these cats to prey on large animals such as bison, horses and young mammoths.
