CERAMICS

For more than 6,500 years, the people of Latin America have been creating beautiful ceramic vessels, figurines and other objects designed for both practical use and ceremonial display. Long before the introduction of the pottery wheel or other modern techniques, people were producing a variety of distinctive and durable objects that persist today to help us tell the story of the past. Many beautiful ceramic objects are still produced today in Latin America, using both modern techniques and local traditions of manufacture and design.

Explore some of the ancient Latin American ceramic traditions presented in our selection of Featured Artifacts, or search our Archival Images database (Subject - Pottery) to view images of talented ceramic craftspeople at work in Mexico and Guatemala in the 1970s.
