Located in the Guatemalan Highlands, at an altitude of 2,260 m above sea level, Iximché was the short-lived capital of the Cakchiquel Maya during the Postclassic period. Built in AD 1470, the site consists of six plazas with temples, palaces, outlying residential compounds, and two ball courts. Iximché allied with the Spanish in 1524 against their rivals the K'iche, and the Spanish founded their first Guatemalan capital just 1.6 km to the west of Iximché.
