Epilogue

Working with a team of experts, you successfully surveyed a crime scene, collected important evidence, excavated a clandestine grave, and analyzed a variety of materials to solve a case.

Through your team's efforts, the victim's remains were identified and returned to his family. Although they are devastated by the death, they now know what happened and can work to achieve some closure. In addition, the evidence you collected may help the police identify a suspect and start the process of bringing a killer to justice.

As you experienced throughout this exercise, forensic investigations are complicated! They involve many, highly skilled professionals; multiple agencies and scientific laboratories; and considerable resources and specialized equipment.

Although the scenario and the victim were fictionalized, all the people you met along the way are real scientists working as forensic consultants to the police and coroners service. Each one is a dedicated and conscientious investigator who must work efficiently and think critically, often under very stressful and difficult circumstances. As they have shown you, the forensic sciences are not for everyone. But for those who choose a profession in the field, helping to provide peace of mind to a mourning family or solve a crime can be a very satisfying and rewarding career.
